Creating a Brand Style & Logo

Updated: Nov 14, 2018

Every brand has a logo and it is the first thing your customers see when they look at your business. A great logo design should embody your company’s branding and get your mission statement across. Although a logo is only a small part of starting a business, it plays a huge role in how a customer sees you.

Before you can come up with a logo design, start with defining your brand style. A brand style is the primary visual design your business will use in branding. Here is an example of a brand style Pinterest board I received from one of my clients to demonstrate her personal branding style:

She has a clear depiction of what she likes and how she wants her brand to be portrayed. From her brand style I was able to pull out key words and key aspects that would used in her online presence:

  • Luxury

  • Pink

  • Diamonds

  • Classy

  • Royalty

Once you have a brand style you can now move on to developing your logo for your company. First step is to check the competition. By doing this you can steal, I mean borrow, some of their ideas and see what the competition already has. By checking out your competition you can determine your audience, what works, and what doesn’t.

Next you want decides what clear idea of your brand you want to be translated into your design. This includes, colors, shapes, images, and fonts. By breaking down each aspect you can start seeing a final image of what your logo will look like. Here are a few examples of what her logo could look like:

Now that you have your logo envisioned, here are some quick tips on what not to do.

  1. Don’t plagiarize other people's work or fonts. This will only make it more difficult for your company if it will late cause problems.

  2. Choose a design that can be timeless or easily updated for evolution.

  3. Be thoughtful in picking out you color palette for your brand because it will largely define your banding style
